William Ruto: The Stone that was rejected turned Chief Cornerstone! By Patrick Katagata @ KatagataJr Irish rugby Union player, Dan Sheehan’s famous quote, “Great people build monuments from stones critics throw at them” might be said of Kenya’s former(now) agile Deputy President, William Ruto, after sailing against the turbulent course, to become Kenya’s fifth President! I have deep respect for Former President Uhuru Kenyatta in manifold respects, but not for his open endorsement/campaigning for Mr. Raila Odinga, as his successor. For all his considerations, he underestimated the effect of his choice for Raila, while ditching Ruto, who torched for him light at his darkest, to not only tantamount to betrayal, but also taste foul of Kenyatta’s real agenda—personal, or for a given coterie— vis-à-vis majority Kenyans! He assumed that everyone believed in his leadership and would, therefore, follow his choice. It is bound to be counterproductive! Deputy President William Ruto (then) re

How to use Android to quit smoking

Image
"Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times." -Mark Twain Can you relate? If one of your New Year's resolutions for 2012 is to quit smoking for good, here are a few Android apps that might help: 1. QuitNow! QuitNow! is a smoking cessation app that can help you track how long since you quit, how much money you've saved, and even the positive impact quitting has had on your health. QuitNow! has achievement badges as well, so you can try to make quitting sort of fun.     2. Quit Smoking Quit Smoking is a widget app that helps you gradually cut down on how much you smoke until you quit. When you get the urge to smoke, you hit the red "smoke" button. The app then asks you what your urge and stress level are, asks if you can wait, and logs the event. It also tracks your daily smoking quota. It's a different approach than QuitNow! and it might work better for those who

APN settings: MTN Uganda

For any of you who travel in the region and use the mobile phone as the primary mode of getting online, getting the settings for a data connection is seriously frustrating. More so since my phone (an android) doesn't for some reason allow me to save the settings from the phone company and I have to manually input them. Thanks to Google (hat tip: ICTD chick ) and some serious aggro, I was able to get the most updated  settings so here goes:- MTN, Uganda: Access point name: MTN APN: MTNDATA Proxy: (blank) Port: (blank) Username: (blank) Password: (blank) Server: (blank) MMSC: (blank) MMS Proxy: 10.120.0.138 MMS Port: (blank) MCC: 641 MNC: 10 APN type: (blank)

A First Draft of Your Next Android Phone...Samsung Galaxy S II

Image
Its the fastest Android phone , bar none, no holds barred, etc., thanks to a crispy Gingerbread core and a 1.2 dual-core chip paired with 1GB of RAM. You can get used to this kind of whiplash. It's a thin, like thinner-than-an-iPhone-4 thin. The camera is like, good: the shots (though the iPhone 4's tweaks makes its photos more pleasant), the 1080p video (which murderfaces the iPhone 4's indoors) and Samsung's more camera-y interface.  Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus display continues to be lovely, if slightly lacking for pixels.                                                                                 As any other phones its has its disadvantages. There isn't an Android phonemaker on the planet who outdoes what Google's already doing with Android. Dont mention that Android's interface is good.  I really wish Samsung would figure out whatever alchemy is required to produce plastic that doesn't feel like a terribly mean joke. The incongruity is
